Jonathan prepares to leave Bistritz. The hotel landlord and his wife are visibly terrified when they learn he is going to Castle Dracula. The landlady implores him not to go because it is the eve of St. George’s Day, a night when “all the evil things in the world will have full sway.” She gives him a crucifix for protection, which he keeps as he boards the coach for the Borgo Pass.
