Dr. Seward tells Arthur that Lucy doesn’t have any official “disease”, but she is certainly sick; he runs a blood test on her but there is nothing wrong; he then contacts his mentor, Professor Abraham Van Helsing from Amsterdam, who is an expert in obscure diseases and who also trained Dr. Seward himself.
