Dracula asks Jonathan to stay for another month and warns him not to sleep in other rooms in the castle. The Count engages Jonathan in a long discussion regarding English law and shipping goods. He forces Jonathan to write three post-dated letters (as for June 12, 19, and 29) to ensure no one comes looking for him too soon. Later that night, Jonathan sees the Count crawl down the castle wall like a lizard.
