In the morning, Jonathan scales the castle wall and enters the Count’s room through the window. He discovers a heap of ancient gold and finds a stone stairway leading down to a ruined chapel. There, he finds the Count lying in a wooden box filled with earth, appearing either dead or in a deep trance, and flees back to his room.
