Mina receives a letter from Jonathan that says he is in a convent in Budapest with a brain fever; she is invited to nurse him back to health, and then marry him so she leaves Whitby immediately. Renfield claims “the Master is at hand!” and escapes the asylum at night; Seward catches up to Renfield outside the old chapel of Carfax, apparently mumbling through the door to someone: “I shall be patient, Master!”
