At 1:00 A.M., Mina finds Lucy sleepwalking in the churchyard; she sees a dark figure with red eyes bending over her and later discovers two small, red pin-pricks on Lucy's throat.

The sea captain is given a public funeral; Mr. Swales is found dead on the churchyard seat with a broken neck and a look of "fear and horror" on his face; to prevent more sleepwalking, Mina takes Lucy for a long, tiring walk to Robin Hood’s Bay.
